We're on the Air!
A new hour-long radio program, "Food for the Soul" now airs at 6 p.m. Sunday evenings on Chicago's Progressive Talk Radio -- 820AM, 92.7FM(North), 92.5FM(West), 99.9FM(South).  It features the worship services of area Unitarian Univeralist congregations, along with special music, testimonials, and short essays elaborating the vision and values of UU's.  Congregations participating in these first broadcasts include DuPage, Third in Chicago, and Unity Temple in Oak Park. Taize Meditation
Taize is a candlelight service of meditation and music. The People's Church of Chicago offers a Taize service on every second Friday, at 6 p.m., led by minister the Rev. Jean Darling.  The service is followed by a coffeehouse with varying feature performers.    The Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation offers a Taize service on the fourth Friday of a month at 7 p.m., led by minsiters the Revs. Clare Butterfield and Emily Gage.

Singing Meditation
The Countryside Church, Unitarian Universalist, of Palatine offers a "Singing Meditation" on the first Friday of a month at 7 p.m., a time of reflection, music, and singing.    Find a stillness at the end of your hectic workweek by joining us for Singing Meditation. In our meditation, facilitated singing and silence combine to create a calming and powerful spiritual experience. Childcare will be available.

Singing Meditation is an interfaith spiritual practice that combines singing—of many types—with group observation of silence. Combining the two practices results in a synergy that enhances each component.  The songs in Singing Meditation are deliberately chosen to be easy to learn. Not all of the songs used in Singing Meditation are slow and contemplative. Many are high-energy and joyful.  The singing part of “Singing Meditation” includes a variety of vocalizations: toning, chanting, singing in rounds, singing in harmony and mantras. The repertoire is interfaith: Jewish, Christian, Sufi, earth-based, Hindu, Buddhist, and others.

The goal of Singing Meditation is to help the participants reach a place inside themselves where they can connect with the Divine, their Inner Core, the Spirit of Life.

Standing on the Side of Love
The Unitarian Universalist Association helped make history in the nation's capital on December 15, 2009.  Through this fall, our "Standing on the Side of Love" campaign developed an interfaith coalition  promoting the legalization of marriage for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens, a coalition which saw its first triumph when, on this date, by an 11-2 margin, the Council of the District of Columbia voted to legalize marriage for LGBT folks in that jurisdiction.  The senior minister of All Souls Church Unitarian in Washington, D.C., the Reverend Robert Hardies, said, "It was thrilling to be present in the Council chambers as history was being made.  When the vote was announced, people shouted and wept for joy.  Friends, this is what it feels like to stand on the side of love."

The campaign has widened its circle of those included in its embrace by launching an initiative to secure immigrants' rights.  MORE

UU Advocacy Network of Illinois
A small group of highly enthusiastic folks from several Chicago-area Unitarian Universalist congregations is taking the first steps toward establishing a statewide advocacy organization for Unitarian Universalists in Illinois, similar to organizations in twelve other states Joining our voices from all over the state in affecting policy reflecting our UU values. Our focus is legislative advocacy, but we foresee advocacy in other venues as well.
